The Red Lands and a visit to the Castle of Arques:

A very nice loop hike with beautiful views of the Pyrenees, the Pic de Bugarach and Rennes le Château. Magnificent discovery of this (small) Grand Canyon – Landscape from a Western movie.

The marvelous, highly eroded red earth forms a succession of small canyons there, which the iron oxides have beautifully colored with these surprising hues that range from a wine lees pigmentation to orange, passing through purples and practically all shades of red. It is in this type of rock formation that many fossil animals are found, including dinosaur eggs. Under a dazzling blue sky and purged of any clouds let us discover this “Jurassic Park” in miniature.

A few kilometers after this magnificent landscape of the Red Lands, a green valley opens up. Into this unexpected gentleness rises the keep of Arques, a masterpiece of Franconian Gothic architecture.
